         Thunderstorms are widespread on Earth, with more than 50,000 occurring every day. Storms form when

warm, unstable air, saturated with water vapor, rises rapidly and cools, forming huge cumulo-nimbus clouds that can measure up to 25 kilometers (16 miles) across and 16 kilometers (10 miles) high in the lower latitudes. The build-up of electrical charges in the clouds and on the ground below culminates in lightning strikes-millions of volts of electricity passing between the clouds and the ground-accompanied by thunder, and usually heavy rain. In Amazonia, heavy evaporation from the Earth's surface leads to frequent and often very violent storms. All over the world storms cause serious damage to crops and buildings, disrupt air and land traffic, interfere with communications, and kill hundreds of people and thousands of animals. Climatologists forecast that over the coming decades, pollution will cause the average air temperature to increase by several degrees. As a result, evaporation will increase, leading to greater amounts of rainfall in some areas and drought in others. Climate change will also likely make extreme weather events such as storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes more frequent, increasing the damage they cause. Large insurance companies are already preparing for these risks.
